Since 1776 more than 41 million Americans have served over the course of the nation's history.

In Sandwich, the stone black monument, draped with the red, white, and blue flag, reads "tribute to the heroic men and women who served in the War on Terrorism and Middle East conflict while keeping America free."

Celeste Latham gave the address to nearly 60 people at the downtown gazebo park on Monday morning.

Ceremonies were conducted by Louis P. Schultz VFW Post 1486 and Brown Miller American Legion Post 181.

Sponsor of the monument was the Sandwich American Legion Riders with donors Jeff Hyatt Construction, Sandwich Park District, John Hartman Construction, Ron Henrich Lawn Care, Sandwich American Legion, Sandwich American Legion Auxiliary, and Sandwich Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Phyllis Davis of Sandwich remembered.

Sandwich's Bill Meyer served in the Vietnam War.

A silent salute honored for those 41 million and those who have passed away from the Schultz and Miller veterans posts in the last year.
